Get Your Kids Baking With Simple Homemade Biscuit Recipes

We’re all in such a hurry it seems these days and nowhere is it more evident than in the kitchen. There was a time when dinner on the table meant hours of preparation. But, without someone home all day, how does a meal prepared from scratch take place? Perhaps the answer is choosing one part of the meal that can be made just like in the old days without too much trouble. How about some simple homemade biscuits?

Biscuits made from scratch are extremely kid-friendly and fuss-free! After throwing just a few simple ingredients into a bowl, you can get your kids involved by having them mix the dough with their hands. Because the dough doesn’t need a lot of attention, even the most distracted little one will be done mixing before they lose their patience with the task!

Basic homemade biscuit recipes typically call for only about five ingredients: flour, salt, baking powder, shortening, and buttermilk or milk. You’ll want to use a big, sturdy mixing bowl (unbreakable if you’re having young kids mix the dough.) Once you or the kids measure everything into the bowl, you are ready to form the dough, then roll it out.

Choose a large surface to work from, someplace that is easy to reach for everyone. Take a little flour and sprinkle over the clean surface. Then place your dough on top. You can use a pastry rolling pin on the dough but flattening the dough by hand will work just as well.

After the dough is flattened, you can use any circular item you want to cut out the biscuit. Using an empty soup can that’s smooth and clean may be ideal for young children, rather than using a sharp object. If you have an authentic biscuit cutter, of course that would be wonderful. Even a drinking glass could work just fine. Whatever you choose, dip the edge of the object into some flour before you cut out the biscuit. This will help keep the biscuit dough from sticking to the cutter.

Don’t forget to get your oven heating before you finish cutting out your biscuits. You’ll want a fully preheated hot oven. Once you have your biscuits cut out and arranged on a baking sheet, then all you have to do is watch them turn a beautiful golden brown.

Making homemade biscuits from scratch only takes about 20 minutes. Do you think you could sacrifice 20 minutes of time during your busy schedule tonight if you knew some hot, golden brown, buttery biscuits were the reward? I’m thinking the answer is “yes!”

You’ve been making quick and easy meals for so long now, don’t you long for one special old fashioned homemade touch to your meal? It only takes a couple ingredients and a few minutes to whip up a batch of wonderfully nostalgic homemade biscuits from scratch. Your meal will look like it took hours to prepare, when all it took was love!
