Greek Culinary – Great Array Of Greek Desserts

Greek sweets come in many varieties and can be made using a range of ingredients and ways, but in this article we shall lay out a few that are both easy to prepare and tasty to eat. They make wonderful gifts, or to serve to guest or satisfy a sweet tooth. The toughest part of any of these recipes is the Greek name. Each is a traditional Greek favorite and every is easy to prepare (one needs no stove time whatsoever). Listed alphabetically.

Honey Puffs – Loukoumathes (Loukoumades) In many areas of Greece, Loukoumathes (also loukoumades) are a New Year’s Eve tradition, and also they are prepared to celebrate the name day of St. Barbara (December 4). The Greek Jewish community also includes these small honeyed puffs at Hanukkah. They are quick and simple to make – twenty minutes start to finish. Serve up hot or warm, and drizzle with honey just before serving.

Semolina Pudding – Halvas Halwas is a type of grainy Greek pudding that is very popular and made using nuts, semolina, cinnamon and raisins.Halvas is served at room temperature and is placed in a mold and cooked on the stove.

Sesame Honey Candy – Pasteli Pasteli is a much loved Greek candy, and can be —————- a variety of seeds and nuts. Called “the original energy bar,” this traditional recipe calls for sesame seeds and honey and creates a chewy candy, perfect with tea or for an energy boost. To wrap for gift-giving, use cellophane.

Sugared Almond Cookies – Kourabiethes Honey and sesame paste are 2 of the favored ingredients found in several Greek desserts. Kourabiethes is relatively easy to prepare and makes for wonderful festival gifts. Its good for health and in Greece it is generally used as bread spread.

Traditional Greek Spoon Sweets (Preserves) – Glyka Koutaliou Spoon sweets are much like preserves, made with fruit, nuts, or vegetables, cooked with sugar to create a thick syrup. As they’re so sweet, they’re served by the spoonful, therefore the name. A traditional offering to guests, spoon sweets can also be used as dessert sauces and condiments. They are easy to prepare – typically a matter of boiling the fruit with sugar. Decorative jars full of these treasures are delightful gifts.
