Baking from scratch has many benefits. For one thing, it is far more impressive to be able to inform your friends and family you made something from scratch. For another thing, it is by far the healthier route to go. Mixes and instant meals are loaded with unhealthy ingredients. This allows them to sit for long periods of time on shelves without spoiling. They are also filled with sugars and high fats. When you bake from scratch, you can eliminate some of the harmful ingredients.

While a challenge, baking from scratch is an exciting adventure. You get to pick what goes in the food, and you are the one in charge of your meal, not a frozen food manufacturer. This also means you have the opportunity to make your meals more healthy. When making a dessert, one simple way to be healthy is to reduce the sugar amount called for by the recipe. Rebel a little. Don’t follow every rigid demand of your cookbook. Most recipes taste fine with half as much sugar. Another thing you can do is use butter rather than margin when you bake. Despite what some people say, recent studies show butter is healthier than margin.

Something else you can do to be healthier is to reduce pesticides. Buying organic fruits and vegetables is one way to do this. If you’re on a tight budget, there’s other ways to do this as well. Sterilize tomatoes, cucumbers and other veggies by soaking them in boiling water for around two to three seconds. For fruits, wash them first, then peel them. If you are handling more delicate foods such as strawberries and lettuce, soak them in saltwater, then rinse them well twice.

These are just a few ways to make your eating healthier. While it may take a little bit more time, trust me it’s worth it. Your body will thank you later for it.
