Make An Old Fashion Pancake Recipe And More

The pancakes eaten today come from an ancient pancake recipe used by the Romans. In any Roman home you could find a flat bread made of some flour, milk and eggs with some spices or honey that was called Alita Dolcia. They topped them with fruits but there were also some that were filled with meats and cheese. The pancake that is more similar to the one we have today was first made during the medieval times in Europe. The first printed recipe was found in 1430 in an early cook book in England.

A special breakfast today consists of pancakes and they are so popular they have a day dedicated to them that takes place before Lent and the Easter tide season starts. Shrove Tuesday is the traditional day to eat as many pancakes as you can since the next day starts the season of Lent and you have to give up sweet things, like pancakes as a sacrifice before Easter.

German pancakes are usually made from potatoes as are the latke from Jewish tradition. Crepes are a form of pancake made in France and they are filled with fruits and other luscious things. Dadar gutung is the name of an Indonesian pancake while the poori is one from India and bao bing is a pancake made in China. Panekoeken is a Dutch pancake made from buckwheat. Puff pancakes that are airy and light can be made and topped with fruits then sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Where ever they come from, pancakes are a staple of the American Diet. An Old fashion pancake recipe is the best there is. It is simple yet fluffy and light and smothered in syrup it makes a great breakfast or lunch. These pancakes are even good at dinner time with a little sausage. To make them you sift together in a large bowl one and one half cups flour, three and one half teaspoons baking powder, one half teaspoon salt, and one tablespoon white sugar. Make sure it is mixed well and then make a well in the center by pushing the ingredients to the side of the bowl leaving a crater in the middle. Pour one and one fourth cup of milk into the crater and crack one egg into it as well. Melt three tablespoons of butter in a measuring cup and pour it in the crater. With a fork start to beat the liquid ingredients incorporating a little of the dry as you go. Go around the crater and keep incorporating all the dry ingredients into the egg and milk mixture until it is all incorporated.

Place a frying pan or griddle on the stove and get it hot. Pour about one tablespoon of oil onto it. Using a ladle fill it with batter and pour it on the griddle or pan. Bubbles will start to form all round the edges of the pancake and when they do appear turn the pancake over. Once the bubbles come back all around the edges you can remove the pancake to a plate and put some butter on it. Make sure to have syrup nearby to pour over the pancake.

You can alter this recipe a bit to give it a little more flavor. To make a buttermilk pancake use the same amount of buttermilk as you did regular milk. Grate the rind of a whole orange and add it to the recipe and instead of milk use orange juice for an orange flavored pancake. Add one teaspoon almond flavoring to make an almond pancake. Take three fourths cup of washed whole blueberries and add to the batter for blueberry pancakes. If you would rather have strawberry pancakes you can slice three fourths of a cup of strawberries and add them instead. If you really want something sweet and fun add one half of a cup of chocolate chips at the end when everything is mixed up. Serve chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream instead of syrup.

It is possible to make chocolate pancakes and they may not go over well for breakfast. They will, however be a hit for dessert. To make them you will need two cups flour, three teaspoons of baking powder, and one fourth of a teaspoon of salt in a bowl. Mix them well and then add three fourths of a cup of granulated sugar. Continue by adding a cup of milk and four teaspoons butter. Mix this up very well then add two large eggs and beat well. Now is where the chocolate comes in. Mix in 6 teaspoons powdered cocoa.

Put a skillet on the stove and get it hot then add the oil. Ladle some of the batter onto the oiled skillet and once bubbles start to gather around the edges of the pancake turn it over. Once the bubbles start to appear again you can place the pancake on a plate and put a little butter on the top. When you are ready to serve just put a few spoonfuls of whipped cream on top and for extra punch sprinkle semi sweet chocolate chips over the whole thing and allow them melt.

Pancakes are a favorite especial for children. Your family will be excited and actually eat breakfast when you serve pancakes. Use the two recipes above and make them different every time you serve them, even at dessert.
