Running Your Donut Business While You Work
Most small business owners actually work full-time jobs and handle the affairs of their company on the side. Even if you are not happy with your full-time job, it still probably provides you a great deal of security. You have a guaranteed income and maybe even benefits. Also think about how difficult it is to make a profit in a small business. Although you are excited to run your business, you must ask yourself the hard questions. What happens if the donut business is not successful? Do you have enough of a financial reserve to support yourself if that happens?
There are good points to working a full time job and running your donut business simultaneously. You can fund your small business with part of your salary, and when the donut business begins to take off you will some extra cash in your pocket. Imagine if something happened to your full-time job and you were not longer able to work. You’d have peace of mind as the donut business is your back-up plan.
Be sure to do your homework on the outlook of donut sales in your area before you quit your day job. Is the market growing? Is your competition successful? Look at the numbers to figure out how much money you will have to make in sales to compensate for the loss of your salary. Are you willing to lose your health insurance and retirement benefits? Quitting your day job could be more costly than you first thought.
Successful entrepreneurs always have drive, determination, and vision of where they want their business to go. This is a necessary component for business growth. But don’t make emotional decisions that you could regret later on?
What if it’s not what you thought it would be? If you give up on that then you will wish you had your old regular job back. Ease into selling donuts while keeping your regular job at least until you can support yourself on your small business income.
